What is the Telephone Allowance?
The Telephone Allowance is one of the household benefits provided by the Department of Social Protection (DSP). If you qualify for household benefits, the Telephone Allowance provides a contribution towards your telephone bill. How do I qualify for the Telephone Allowance?
The DSP sets the eligibility criteria for the Telephone Allowance and full details can be found on the DSP website www.welfare.ie.
Why is the Telephone Allowance changing?
The Department of Social Protection (DSP) has reduced the Telephone Allowance due to budgetary constraints. If you have further questions you should contact them at your local office or visit www.welfare.ie.
What is the reduction in the Telephone Allowance?
The Telephone Allowance is reducing to €9.50 including VAT per month for everyone who currently claims the benefit.
When will the changes take effect?
The DSP reduction in the Telephone Allowance will take effect from the 1st January 2013, but eir is not implementing the change until the 1st February 2013. All eir customers will receive a letter from eir in advance detailing how the changes will affect them personally.
Have the other household benefits that I receive been changed?
You will need to talk to the DSP or your supplier directly about any changes to the other household benefits.
What Telephone Allowance benefits will I get after 1st February?
From the 1st of February you will get the Telephone Allowance of €9.50 inc. VAT as set out by the DSP.

When will I see the changes in my bill?
The changes take effect from the 1st February 2013. If you have handset rental, this is paid in advance and you will see the charge appear in your first bill after 1st February 2013. Call value is billed in arrears, so the reduction in call value will take effect from your first bill after 1st April 2013.
Why do the Telephone Allowance benefit amounts on my bill differ from the amounts you referred to in my letter?
VAT is added at the end of your bill, so all the items on your bill including the Telephone Allowance items are shown excluding VAT.
How are eir communicating with customers?
eir will be writing to all customers who are affected by the reduction in Telephone Allowance in advance of their first bill after the 1st of January 2013.
I no longer have the handset I am renting, what should I do?
Please call us on 1800 661 622 if you no longer have the eir handset you originally rented. We can advise you of your options which include sending you a new handset from the range we currently have available.
