We are proud to work with Special Olympics Ireland to help make the Young Athletes Programme possible. The aim is to engage young athletes with an intellectual disability in play and sport activities. Children can participate form the age of 4 years.  The programme is all about fun and delivers the same benefits that sport brings to anybody, no matter their intellect.

There are currently 2,135 children in Ireland aged between 4 and 7yrs with an intellectual disability. (source: National Intellectual Disability Database). The long-term goal of Special Olympics Ireland is to be in a position to offer access to these children a club within their locality where the Young Athlete Programme will be in place

The Young Athletes Programme provides the following;

  • A high quality play and sport activity programme delivered by trained Coaching Ireland Children coaches, parents and volunteers.
  • Access for the athlete and their family members to a network of support, which is vital at this early stage in their child’s development..
  • A pathway for Young Athletes for future membership into Special Olympics clubs as presently, a potential athlete can register to join Special Olympics from 6 years of age.
  • Ensure children with an intellectual disability have the fundamental movement skills before they compete* in a Special Olympics club (from age 8 onwards).
