Who Is RootMetrics?

RootMetrics® is an independent mobile analytics firm that measures mobile network performance and offers insights into the consumer mobile experience. RootMetrics provides data on mobile network performance to help the networks improve and give consumers an end-to-end look at mobile performance. RootMetrics offers its series of RootScore® Reports that show how the networks perform across all the spaces of a consumer's mobile life, as well as its downloadable CoverageMap app. To ensure that RootMetrics testing reflects real-world mobile usage, testing is conducted based on where, when and how consumers use their smartphones most often.

What's a RootScore?

RootMetrics offers a RootScore for each category of performance that we test: Overall, Network Reliability, Network Speed, Data, Call and Text Performance. RootScores offer a simple way to translate thousands or millions of complex data points into clear and easy-to-understand marks of performance. RootScores are designed to reflect a consumer’s experience of network performance and are scaled from 0-100. It's simple: the higher the score, the better the performance.

RootScores approaching the upper limit (100) indicate extraordinary performance. Scores approaching the lower limit (0) represent network performance that would be clearly unacceptable to everyday consumer usage.

No single test determines RootScore results for any performance category. RootScores are calculated from multiple tests that are weighted according to their impact on an end-user’s experience.

How are RootScores calculated?

After the tests are evaluated for accuracy, the results are converted into scores using a proprietary algorithm. Mobile network operator rankings are determined through statistical comparison of RootScores. RootMetrics analyses the operators’ scores to determine when RootScores statistically differ between operators. We then use a standard competition-ranking algorithm to assign each operator a final rank.

Operators with divergent scores are at times determined to be statistically indistinguishable and therefore receive the same rank, and operators with very close scores can receive different final rankings depending on how they compare to other operators' test results.

What's a RootScore Award?

RootScore Awards are granted to the top-performing mobile network operators in each category RootMetrics tests. If two or more operators share the highest rank in the same category by recording statistically indistinguishable results, each operator earns a RootScore Award in that category.

RootMetrics test categories

Overall Performance: A combination of reliability and speed results from data, call, and text testing.

Network Reliability: A holistic look at reliability performance across data, call, and text testing.

Network Speed: A holistic look at speed performance across data testing.

Data Performance: RootMetrics tests reliability and speed during file uploads and downloads, downloading email, and while downloading files that represent loading typical webpages and apps.

Call Performance: RootMetrics tests how reliably each network is able to place and maintain calls.

Text Performance: RootMetrics tests how reliably and quickly consumers can send and receive text messages.

What is the contract length?

All our broadband, TV, mobile and home phone bundles are subject to an 18 months contract.

How will I receive my mobile?

Once your online order has been placed, an eir expert will be in touch to confirm your delivery address. We’ll then deliver your mobile to your door by courier.

Please be aware, orders placed during the weekend or on public holidays mean our eir expert will not in in touch until the next working day.

Can I keep my existing number?

Yes you can keep your existing number when you switch to eir.

All you need to do is select the option to keep your existing number when you are purchasing through our online store. If you have already received your new mobile or SIM, please contact our eir Mobile Customer Care to arrange this for you.

If you are switching from a bill pay service from another mobile provider, please note you will need your previous account number to complete the switch.

Unlimited broadband

Unlimited broadband means you and your whole family can shop, stream and download as much as you like and not worry about exceeding a usage limit. Subject to a fair usage cap, don’t worry the usage cap will cover even the largest family.  

Unlimited home phone

Depending on which home phone plan you decide on you will get unlimited landline and mobile calls within your bundle. These calls are subject to fair usage cap.  Bundled minutes exclude premium rate and non-geographic usage.

Other useful information

  • Prices include a Direct Debit and self-service discount of €2. Customers signed up to Direct Debit and who register to My eir and paperless billing will maintain this €2 discount on their account. If the customer does not pay by Direct Debit they will be liable to pay an additional €2 for each billing period. Direct Debit is mandatory for online orders.
  • eir Fibre Broadband, eir Fibre Extreme and eir Broadband is subject to availability.
  • Bundles subject to a minimum contract term of 18 months. Early cease charges will apply where service is ceased within the minimum contract period.

Free Parental control

Our parental controls are router-level controlled: meaning that all devices connected to the home Wi-Fi network will be automatically subject to any blocks set up. Parental control can help you to:

  • Protect all family members from inappropriate content
  • Tailor control based on the device or content category so the 18 year old has more freedom than the 10 year old
  • Set up the total number of Internet hours in a day or set specific times of the day when your child can be online
  • Block certain websites or restrict access
