23 July 2020 - eir’s 4G mobile network reaches 99% of the population

July 23rd 2020 eir, the principal provider of fixed-line and mobile telecommunications services in Ireland, today announced that its 4G mobile network now covers 99% of the population of Ireland, as well as more than 95% by geography. This means that customers can enjoy mobile data speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G wherever they go in Ireland. This development is part of eir’s ongoing investment in its mobile network, which will ultimately deliver 4G coverage to 99% of the island of Ireland.

Carolan Lennon, CEO of eir, said: "The transformation of eir's network continues at pace and more than 99% of the population of Ireland now have access to super-fast mobile 4G Internet with eir, ensuring customers can access the fastest data speeds, the most reliable call quality and widest mobile coverage. eir's network now brings 4G mobile coverage to more than 95% of the island by geography, up from 86% when we began our upgrade programme in 2019 and well on the way to our target of 99%. This makes it possible to stay connected to loved ones and to work with confidence no matter where you are in the country."

eir has delivered 99% mobile geographic coverage in 11 counties to date (Carlow, Clare, Kildare, Laois, Leitrim, Longford, Louth, Meath, Roscommon, Wexford and Wicklow) with more on the way.

eir launched Ireland’s largest 5G mobile network last year. The service is currently available in more than 21 towns and cities across the country and will ultimately reach every major town and city, equating to 30% of the population of Ireland. 5G services provide peak download speeds of 1 Gbps for customers, compared to typical 4G download speeds of approximately 100 Mbps. eir continues to expand the range of 5G handsets available on its No Limits 5G Data plans, with the recent addition of the Samsung Galaxy S20 5G and the Samsung Galaxy A51 5G.
