Ireland's Leading Disability Activist Joanne O'Riordan to receive award at eir Spiders Awards

Joanne O’Riordan, one of Ireland’s leading disability activists will be presented with the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Technological Empowerment' Award at the upcoming eir Spider Awards & Gala Dinner. Joanne was born without arms and legs and is one of only seven people worldwide living with this extremely rare condition called Tetra-amelia syndrome. But Joanne’s determination and utter brilliance has propelled her to the world stage in her drive to urge technology companies to develop solutions that give people living with disabilities the same options as those without.

Chairman of the judging panel and Small Business Director, eir Business, Gary Disley commented, "The eir Spider Awards celebrate their 20th anniversary this year and eir Business is delighted to be involved once again. The quantity and quality of submissions never ceases to impress and this year is no exception. However, what makes the 2015 event extra special is presenting the "Technological Empowerment Award" to  Joanne O’Riordan. Joanne is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest technology advocates and her drive, determination and sheer passion to make technology count should be celebrated.'

The eir Spider Awards & Gala Dinner will be held in Dublin's DoubleTree Hotel on Thursday 29th October 2015. Joanne O’Riordan will speak at the event and talk about the ongoing importance of technology in her life and the progress that is being made by Trinity College in creating a robot to help her with everyday tasks.

The 2015 eir Spider Awards shortlist was announced last week and includes four new categories, including Best Acquisition Campaign, Best Online Customer Service or Best Online Retention Campaign, Best Use of Mobile Technology and Best Digital Start Up. The new categories were created to celebrate the Awards' 20th anniversary, as well as highlighting the constantly changing and increasingly competitive environments digital businesses operate in.

A full shortlist of all eighteen categories is provided below and is also available on the eir Spider Awards website www.eirspiders.ie.

The categories at this year’s eir Spider Awards are designed to acknowledge and promote businesses and communities who are making their mark through technological advancements, innovation and e-commerce. Similar to previous years, the awards will highlight digital achievements across a range of categories including: financial services, tourism, charity, retail, news, education and entertainment.

The new categories also play an important role as they focus on emerging marketing and business areas. Over the last 20 years, many businesses have started as digital businesses first. The awards will look for new businesses that have successfully brought to market an innovative new online product, utility, service or store. The Judges will identify the big data trailblazer with the best data management, data integration and web analytics application in their business and finally, creative advertising – be it a platform or campaign – with exceptional execution that demonstrated tangible acquisition results for a business, will also be rewarded.

This year's awards will take place on the 29th October 2015 in the DoubleTree Hotel in Dublin and will be hosted by well-known personalities Jennifer Maguire and Bernard O’Shea. Tickets to the event are available at www.eirspiders.ie

The eir Spider Awards are hosted in conjunction with Business & Finance Magazine.
