Today, Mayo-born, Dublin-based writer and performer Maria Kelly has been announced as the chosen act in this years’ eir Other Voices Open Call. Maria will now go on to perform at the IMRO Other Room recordings at the eir Other Voices Festival in Dingle this December, courtesy of eir.
Maria was chosen by public vote from an outstanding shortlist of four artists from across Ireland, North and South. Her ethereal vocals and deeply personal writing caught the imagination of listeners. Maria released her first single Before It Has Begun in 2015 on Veta Records, with the follow-up track Stitches named by The Irish Times as one of the 50 Best Tracks of 2016. Her debut EP The Things I Should hit the shelves earlier this year and was greatly lauded by both Irish and international music media.
Maria has toured extensively in Ireland and the UK, with high profile support slots alongside KT Tunstall, James Vincent McMorrow and Marc Cohn. Her most recent Irish tour was a co-headliner with Dublin musician Ailbhe Reddy, which also took in a packed to the rafters show at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton. Maria is no stranger to Dingle, having performed on the Other Voices Music Trail in 2015.
Along with a performance at the IMRO Other Room recordings during the eir Other Voices Festival this December, which will be recorded and featured in the RTÉ TV series in 2018, eir will also make possible further music-career support for Maria, including three days in a recording studio with an engineer, the production company and budget to create a music performance video and practical music industry mentoring from the eir Other Voices team.
This is eir’s second year of title sponsorship of the Festival, the eir Other Voices Open Call 2017 is a key part of this year’s sponsorship.
Commenting on the eir Other Voices Open Call announcement, Oisin Masterson, Head of Brand and Marketing, eir, said: “A huge congratulations to Maria Kelly on being chosen to perform at this year’s festival. Getting the chance to perform at the IMRO Other Room is a real head-start in any music career. eir is delighted to play a role in developing and promoting new Irish music, and to make it possible for Maria to get the support she needs. There was a fantastic shortlist and I would like to thank the artists for sharing their music with us and participating in the Open Call. A huge thank you as well to everyone who voted.”
