Mobile traffic on eir network nearly doubles during 2020

Pandemic-driven, as more people work, study and socialise remotely

02.02.21 February 2021: eir, the principal provider of fixed-line and mobile telecommunications services in Ireland, saw mobile traffic on its network nearly double during 2020, up over 80%, as the pandemic forced people to work, study and socialise remotely. eir’s 4G mobile network is now available to more than 99% of the population of Ireland, and nearly 98% of the island by geography, the result of eir’s €150 million network transformation programme. Super-fast mobile 4G Internet ensures customers can utilise the fastest data speeds, the most reliable call quality and the widest mobile coverage.

Carolan Lennon, CEO of eir, said: “Mobile connectivity has become of fundamental importance for many of us due to the pandemic. Traffic on eir’s mobile network increased by over 80% in 2020 as essential aspects of our lives were forced to immediately take place online. Working, education and staying connected with our loved ones is now facilitated by online remote working tools, video conferencing providers, and education and wellness apps, all of which require super-fast data speeds. Despite the challenges this last year has brought, the transformation of eir’s mobile network has continued at pace and we are proud to keep our customers connected through our world class mobile network.”

eir has delivered geographical coverage of more than 99% in 17 counties including Carlow, Cavan, Clare, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Leitrim, Limerick, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow.

In 2019 eir launched Ireland’s largest 5G mobile network which is now available in every county across Ireland and extends to over 55% population coverage. 5G services provide peak download speeds of 1 Gbps for customers. eir continues to expand the range of 5G handsets available on its No Limits 5G Data plans, with the recent addition of the new Samsung Galaxy S21 and the Samsung Galaxy A42 5G. eir’s 4G broadband plan offers reliable internet connection over eir’s extensive 4G mobile network, for only €29.99 monthly, meaning customers can work or study from home as well as stream movies and TV shows, listen to music and game.
